7 Signs You Need an Electrical Panel Upgrade

Your electrical panel is the backbone of your home's power system. When it can't keep up — or when it becomes a safety hazard — ignoring it isn't an option. Here are the seven signs that mean it's time to call a licensed electrician.

01

Breakers Trip Frequently

The occasional tripped breaker is normal. But if you're resetting breakers weekly — or a breaker trips every time you run the microwave and the dishwasher at the same time — your panel doesn't have the capacity for your home's current electrical load. This is the #1 sign it's time for an upgrade.

02

Lights Flicker When Appliances Start

When your HVAC, refrigerator, or washing machine kicks on and your lights dim or flicker, it means your circuits are being overwhelmed. This "voltage sag" is a sign your panel is working at or beyond its capacity.

03

You Still Have a Fuse Box

Fuse boxes were phased out of NJ homes decades ago for good reason — fuses can't protect modern electrical loads as effectively as circuit breakers. If your home still has a fuse box, upgrade it. Many insurance companies require it. Every lender will flag it.

04

Burning Smell or Warm Panel

This is a safety emergency. A burning smell near your electrical panel, or a panel that feels warm to the touch, means something is overheating. Turn off the main breaker if you can and call a licensed electrician immediately. Do not ignore this.

05

Your Panel Is 25+ Years Old

Electrical panels are designed to last 25–40 years. If yours is older, it may use outdated breaker technology that doesn't provide adequate protection. Certain brands like Federal Pacific and Zinsco are known to be unsafe and should be replaced regardless of age.

06

You're Adding High-Demand Loads

Planning to install an EV charger? Adding a hot tub? Building a home addition? Installing solar panels or a whole-home generator? All of these add significant load to your electrical system. Before any of these projects, we assess your panel to see if it can handle the new demand — and upgrade it if needed.

07

You Can't Add More Circuits

If your panel's breaker slots are full and there's no room to add new circuits, you're stuck — unless you upgrade. A new 200A panel gives you the capacity and space to add circuits for home offices, workshops, outdoor areas, and more.
